National Family Literacy Day, first established by Congress in 1994 in partnership with the National Center for Families Learning, is observed every year on November 1st. It marks the beginning of National Family Literacy Month and serves as a powerful reminder that learning doesn’t just happen in classrooms—it begins at home! This day was created to highlight the vital role families play in developing children’s reading, writing, and communication skills, and to encourage parents and caregivers to become active participants in their children’s educational journey.
Whether you’re a seasoned homeschooler or simply looking to make reading more meaningful at home, these activities will help you celebrate the joy of learning together.
Family Storytime
Make storytime special on National Family Literacy Day by picking a favorite book (or 2!) and reading together as a family. Take turns reading aloud so everyone gets a chance to practice fluency and expression, while also enjoying each other’s voices. To make the experience even more special, set the stage for connection by creating a cozy reading nook: pile up pillows, wrap yourselves in soft blankets, and don’t forget the snacks!
Write a Story Together
Storytelling becomes a magical, memory-making activity when families collaborate to create their own tales. Start with a fun or mysterious story starter sentence—something like “One morning, the mailbox was glowing green…”—and then take turns adding a sentence, letting imaginations run wild. Each family member contributes a twist, surprise, or hilarious moment, turning the story into something totally unique. Once finished, bring the tale to life by illustrating it together, using markers, crayons, or even digital tools. For an extra-special keepsake, bind the pages into a homemade book that preserves your family’s creativity for years to come.
The Once Upon a Pancake series is one of our favorites and is another great option for writing together as a family!
Literacy Game Night
Turn game night into a literacy-building adventure by playing board games and card games that challenge vocabulary, spelling, and quick thinking. Favorites like Scrabble, Boggle, Bananagrams, or Play on Words offer playful ways to practice language skills while sharing laughs and friendly competition. For a personalized twist, create your own word-themed games—think DIY BINGO with sight words, silly rhymes, or literary characters—to suit your family’s interests and learning levels.

Themed Reading Day
Build excitement around reading by choosing a fun theme—like animals, space, or cars—and curating a mini book collection around it. As you read, invite kids to imagine, question, and connect with the stories through discussion and play. Then, dive into creativity by making a themed art project inspired by what you’ve read, whether it’s painting a jungle scene, crafting a rocket ship, or designing a collage of colorful vehicles.
Family Cooking
Cooking together is a delicious way to blend literacy with hands-on learning. Find a recipe that excites everyone—maybe cookies, pancakes, or a favorite cultural dish—and read through it as a team, highlighting unfamiliar words and following each step carefully. Measuring ingredients and interpreting instructions helps children connect reading to real-world actions, build vocabulary, and practice math skills, all while making sweet memories around the table.

Visit the Library or Bookstore
A trip to the local library or bookstore is a wonderful way to nurture your child’s love for reading. Give them time to browse, explore different genres, and choose books that spark their curiosity—it’s empowering and builds ownership of their learning journey. Whether they leave with a stack of picture books, graphic novels, or chapter adventures, the experience reinforces that reading is both personal and exciting.
Book Character Dress-Up
Encourage children to connect with stories by sharing why they love a particular character—maybe it’s their bravery, silliness, or cleverness that stands out. Then, bring the character to life by acting out favorite scenes together, using props, costumes, or dramatic voices to make it playful and memorable. This kind of role-play deepens comprehension, builds empathy, and transforms reading into an imaginative adventure.
Family Literacy Pledge
Crafting a family literacy pledge is a meaningful way to build accountability and excitement around reading all year long. Gather as a family to set personalized goals—whether it’s reading a set number of books, exploring different genres, or trying out creative literacy activities like writing stories or visiting the library. Display your pledge in a visible spot and revisit it throughout the year to celebrate progress, share discoveries, and stay motivated as a team.
National Family Literacy Day reminds us that learning is most powerful when it’s shared — and home is the perfect place to begin. By setting aside time for reading, storytelling, creativity, and play, families create not only stronger literacy skills, but stronger connections. Whether it’s acting out a beloved book character or cooking from a recipe together, these simple moments become lasting memories that nurture a lifelong love of learning.
