8 Ways to Celebrate National Family Literacy Day at Home

Celebrating National Family Literacy Day at home can be a fun and enriching experience for children of all ages. Let’s explore 8 engaging activities for families to do together:

Family Storytime

Pick a favorite book (or 2!) and read together as a family. Take turns reading aloud. Bonus: create a cozy reading space with pillows, blankets, and snacks!

Write a Story Together

Collaborate to create a story. Begin with a story starter sentence, then each family member takes turns adding a line to the story. Bonus: illustrate it and bind it for a hard copy that lasts forever!

The Once Upon a Pancake series is one of our favorites and is another great option for writing together as a family!

Play board games or card games that focus on literacy, such as Scrabble, Boggle, Bananagrams, or Play on Words. You can also create your own games, such as word BINGO.

Choose a theme (e.g. animals, space, cars) and select books related to that theme. After reading, create a themed art project.

Find a recipe and read it together. Involve children in measuring ingredients and following instructions, combining literacy with practical life skills.

Take a trip to a local library or bookstore and let the children explore and choose books they are interested in.

Have everyone dress up as their favorite book character for the day. Share why they love that character and act out some scenes from the book.

Together, create a family literacy pledge where everyone commits to reading a certain number of books or trying new literacy activities throughout the year.

These activities not only promote literacy but also strengthen family bonds. Enjoy celebrating National Family Literacy Day together!
